"Entiendo que la NFL decidiera hacer eso (el playback), pues solamente tienen unos minutos para preparar todo el escenario y hay millones de cosas que podrían salir mal y arruinar el sonido para todos los espectadores. No hubo ni siquiera oportunidad de discutir esto, la NFL no quiere arriesgar su show con un mal sonido".
Depués de la catarata de críticas luego de la presentación, Flea decidió dejar en claro que los RHCP siempre estuvieron en contra de los playbacks.

"Los RHCP siempre han estado en contra se hacer playback. La última vez que intentamos hacerlo fue a finales de los años 80, cuando nos sacaron del programa británico ‘The Top of the Pops’ gracias a que durante los ensayos no quisimos hacer playback correctamente, yo toqué el bajo con mi zapato, John tocó la guitarra encima de los hombros de Anythony y prácticamente tuvimos una lucha en el escenario. Hemos hecho playback en uno o dos shows de MTV, pero siempre ha sido un relajo. Tomamos nuestra música muy en serio, es algo sagrado para nosotros y cualquiera que nos haya visto en vivo sabe que tocamos con todo nuestro corazón, hacemos mucha improvisación y sudamos sangre en cada show. Hemos estado haciendo eso por 31 años. Así que, cuando llegó el momento del show del Super Bowl, había mucha confusión entre nosotros sobre si debíamos hacerlo o no, pero al final decidimos que era una oportunidad loca y única y que simplemente teníamos que hacerla y divertirnos…Durante el show, Josh, Chad y yo tocamos junto con la canción pre-grabada, así que no fue necesario conectar los instrumentos. ¿Podríamos haber conectado todo para evitar decepcionar a la gente? Claro, sin problema, pero pensamos que era mejor no fingir y actuar como si fuera la grabación de un video frente a millones de personas, pero con voz en vivo…Estoy muy agradecido con la NFL por habernos invitado y con Bruno… Volvería a hacer todo otra vez. Nosotros, como banda, aspiramos a crecer como músicos y compositores para continuar tocando en vivo en el escenario para cualquiera que quiera quedar sorprendido".
